In 2 of the 5 cases synopsized, cirrhotic changes in perilobular spaces of the liver were present, attended by but independent of focal schistosomal granulomas in the walls of blood vessels or among the parenchymal cells. In a third case the liver was the seat of chronic passive congestion, together with patchlike areas of interlobular fibrosis. Scattered throughout were numerous small granulomas arranged around the ova of schistosomes. In the remaining 2 cases the changes in the liver were limited practically exclusively to occasional parenchymal granulomas around schistosome ova. Ova alone are not considered capable of causing perilobular cirrhosis of the liver; the latter is believed attributable to poor dietary conditions under which the patients live.
