METHODSMale mongrel dogs were used that were between 15-20 kg in weight and more than 1 year of age. Each had been inspected by a veterinarian, received an antihelmintic, dipped in a chlorinated solution to control parasites, immunized for distemper and hepatitis, and quarantined for 1 week. In addition to the care provided by the personnel of the Animal Care Unit, the animals were inspected daily and weighed weekly. To prevent problems associated with infections, the dogs received tetracycline hydrochloride (Sumycin, ER Squibb and Sons, New York City)(125 “g/dog), intramuscular injections of 600,000 units of benzathine penicillin G (Bicillin), and topical applications of 2% Furacin powder(Eaton Laboratories, Norwich, NY). They were housed in 30 inch x 30 inch x 25 inch cages and maintained at a room temperature of 22 C. The testing apparatus and procedures used for rats (41, 43) was modified to determine the strength of the ligaments from dogs (Fig. 1). In essence, this meant that the dogs were sacrificed with sodium pentobarbital(300 mg/kg) and the hindlegs quickly removed. The plantaris, gastrocnemius and extensor digitorium longus muscles were also dissected and weighed on an analytical balance. The soft tissues around the joint were removed leaving the capsule and ligaments intact. The bone-capsule-bone preparation was placed into the testing apparatus and the spatial relationship between the femur and tibia recorded. The preparation was then removed and all remaining tissue was carefully removed except the medial collateral ligament. The knee preparation was then returned to the testing apparatus where it was placed at an angle of 120-125” between the femur and the tibia. This angle was selected after roentgenograms were obtained from standing unanesthetized dogs. The femur was attached to the stationary transducer(Schaevitz-Bytrex Inc., Waltham, Mass., JP series) while the tibia was at-
