Hamycin is a newer antifungal drug produced by Streptomyces pimprina with activity in vitro," and in experimental infections in animals.•-7 It resembles another antifungal agent, amphotericin B, which is also a polyene and which has a virtually identical ultraviolet spectrum and equivalent percentage content of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. It differs from amphotericin B in that it is soluble in methanolic calcium chloride, is allegedly better absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract,"·• and is more active (as well as toxic) in some experimental infections in mice!· 5 It has been suggested that hamycin may have a place in the treatment of the systemic mycoses in man.•·•. 10• 11 The present report is a summary of the results of the use of this drug by the oral route in 10 patients with systemic mycoses.Ten patients, 7 of whom had North American blastomycosis, 2 who had chronic cavitary histoplasmosis, and one with long-standing cryptococcal meningitis, were selected for the study, The diagnosis of each patient's condition was confirmed by isolation in culture and identification of the causative fungus.
