A laryngoscopic photographic procedure was conducted on 4 groups of subjects chosen on the basis of 6 low-pitched males, 6 high-pitched males, 6 low-pitched females, and 6 high-pitched females, to allow for measurements in the length of each subject''s vocal folds under 5 conditions: 1 of no phonation, 4 of phonation at 4 different fundamental frequencies. As fundamental frequencies raised, the vocal folds systematically lengthened. In the abducted position the vocal folds are as long or longer than they are in any condition of phonation. Low-pitched individuals exhibit generally longer vocal folds.
