In the topography of practice, they [researchers] must eIther remam on the hard dry ground where they can function accordmg to the canons of technical rationality, applying research-based theory and technique to a narrow range of well formed problems... of problems of hmited scope and importance... or they can descend to the swampy terram below where they cannot be rigorous in any sense they know how to descnbe.(Donald Schon, 1984, p. 4).The chapters in this volume treat advances in environment, behavior, and design. But what are" advances" in applied environmental design research? Discussing this question, we realized that its very formulation implicitly assumes both that research is a separate activity from design and that research precedes design. Under this paradigm, the researcher operates as an academic or a consultant, submits a report or writes a paper, and then, most likely, disappears from the scene while someone else reads, understands, and finally applies the results. This model reflects a traditional epistemology of design research, in which research-based knowledge is applied to a design problem, much like a band-aid is applied to a bruise. Band-aids are useful and impor-
