Studied the rate of rearrest and the factors associated with recidivism for 91 mentally ill criminals (MICs; mean age 40.3 yrs) released from the Barcelona Maximum Security Hospital in Messina, Italy. The treatment policy of MICs in Italy and the relevant research on the dangerousness of MICs released from maximum security hospitals are reviewed. The results confirm that MICs show a modest incidence of criminal recidivism with 21.9% of Ss arrested again, 7.69% for serious crimes. Recidivism seems to be an epiphenomenon of marginal social, cultural, and working conditions that put Ss at risk, rather than of the Ss' mental illness.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
