Oncology Group(RDOG), who set out to assess the accuracy of magnetic reso-nance (MR) imaging in the staging of prostatic cancer (1). They are to be cornplimented on their efforts, although their results-with which we are not in full agreement-will no doubt come as a disappointment to many. Taken at face value, the RDOG’s conclusion, that MR imaging-even when performed with an endorectal coil-is not an accurate measure of the stages of prostatic cancer, seems to conflict with the conclusions of other recently reported studies on the same subject (2-5). Because studies about diagnostic accuracy and technology assessment are being watched with ever-increasing attentive-ness by health-policy-making organiza-tions, it is crucial that such evaluations be performed with the utmost care and that their conclusions be irrefutable. Thus, it is important that an explanation for the discrepancy between the RDOG results and those of other observers be sought. To this end, we reviewed the authors’ methods carefully and discov-ered several areas of concern that, when thoroughly examined, may help elucidate the reasons these results are divergent.
