It is argued that the Peccei—QuinnU(1)PQ symmetry, needed to solve the strong CP-problem, and the localB−L symmetry of weak interactions may be broken at the same large mass scale leading to massive (but light) neutrinos and a very light axion. We determine this mass scale in the context of anSO (10) model to be between 109–1015 GeV, depending on the value of sin2θw. This links the possible visibility of the superlight axion to the observability of the small neutrino mass.
