NEED FOR CLOSURE (NFC) describes a desire for any definite answer to a question or problem instead of confusion or uncertainty (Webster & Kruglanski, 1994). Researchers have investigated NFC in social-cognitive, cross-cultural, and applied contexts, including consumer behavior (e.g., Vermeir & Van Kenhove, 2005), politics (e.g., Kemmelmeier, 1997; Van Hiel, Pandelaere, & Duriez, 2004), and intergroup relations (e.g., Bar-Tal & Labin, 2001; Kosic, Kruglanski, Pierro, & Mannetti, 2004). The most common operationalization of NFC is the unidimensional use of the Need for Closure Scale (NFCS; Webster & Kruglanski), treating NFC as a stable and unitary trait. However, the scale contains two orthogonal factors: Desire for Decisiveness (DD) and Need for Structure (NS; Neuberg, Judice, & West, 1997), the effects of which researchers might overlook when using the total-scale (unidimensional) score. To illustrate this interpretational risk, Neuberg, West, Judice, and Thompson (1997) investigated whether DD and NS correlated differentially with any of the Big Five traits (O. P. John, E. M. Donahue, & R. L. Kentle’s, 1991, inventory). However, those authors did not report p values or all exact numerical correlation values, did not interpret the correlations, and described the report as “simplified, given space concerns” (p. 1022;
