METHODS The initial information-gathering step in the preparation of this recommendation was a questionnaire requesting details on procedures subcommittee members use for fi xation of rodent lungs in formalin, and their opinions regarding the advantages and disadvantages of fixation of lungs by intratracheal instillation. The responses to this questionnaire were shared among all members, and discussed further via conference telephone call and e-mail communications. The predominant issue in these discussions dealt with the concerns expressed that intratracheal infusion of fi xative may wash out lung exudates and in ammatory cells, produce artifactual peribronchiolar and perivascular cuffs, or induce artifacts that could be interpreted as emphysema, as noted before.
