Lesions of tuberculosis were found in wild badgers in Gloucestershire; 36 of 165 badger carcases, and 12 of 112 faeces samples examined between April, 1971, and April, 1973, were infected with Mycobacterium bovis. Infected faeces or carcases were found in 23 separate locations. Seventeen of these locations were either within the farm boundaries or within half-a-mile of cattle herds in which tuberculosis was a persistent problem. The possible role of badgers as a reservoir of tuberculosis in Gloucestershire is discussed.
