Whiteness (1998) is one of the key works in this area of study, and How Racism Takes Place builds on that work and his research on urban culture. This book strengthens Lipsitz’s position as one of the major contributors to theoretical and historical works on race. As Lipsitz notes, racial conditions have improved, as indicated by the election of Barack Obama in 2008, but his book describes a common misunderstanding of race based on these changes. Lipsitz writes that according to this view,“Black people have shown themselves to be simply unfit for freedom” because “in a time when civil rights laws clearly ban discrimination, the persistence of racial inequality demonstrates that Blacks have been unable to take advantage of the opportunities afforded them”(p. 1). In powerful and compelling writing, Lipsitz examines the problems with this belief and provides insights into the broad context and multiple factors that shape the ways race continues to work in society.
