We believe that palladium has the potential to provide a new method of supplying hydrogen molecules to the apex of the needle electrode of a field ionization proton beam source, because it has the highest hydrogen permeability among all metals. Hydrogen permeability of a fine palladium needle was measured in a preliminary experiment, and was found to be 2.0×10-5 Torr·l/s at 600° C for a hydrogen pressure of 1.5 atm. This value is of the same level as that for bulk palladium, and is expected to be sufficient for the proposed ion source. In the ionization experiments, a small ion curtent was detected.
