In preliminary studies, the sand beneath driftwood on beaches was sampled from 50 different locations in Japan, and fungi on the sand were observed under the microscope. The most frequently observed species were Corollospora maritima, C. sp. No. 3, C. sp. No. 4, Arenariomyces trifurcatus, Carbosphaereüa leptosphaerioides, Lulworthia sp. No. l and an unidentified species. Fungi such äs Corollospora lacera, C. pulchella, C. sp. No. 2, Lulworthia sp. No. 2 and Carb. pleosporoides were only observed sporadically. Further observations were made of marine fungi using baiting techniques. Corollospora maritima, C. pulchella, C. sp. No. 2 and Arenariomyces trifurcatus were again found and in addition C. sp. No. 5, Lindra thalassiae, Crinigera maritima, Nia vibrissa, Varicosporina ramulosa and Asteromyces cruciatus were observed on the sand beneath some Substrates. Eighteen species of sand-inhabiting marine fungi have so far been identified from Japanese beaches in the temperate zone.
