In the last decades, much knowledge has been gained on catalytic mechanisms for methane activation. Recent advances in catalysts for oxidative coupling and oxyhalogenation of methane make these routes promising for industrial implementation. The increasing understanding of enzymatic oxidation of methane to methanol has motivated the development of biomimetic catalysts. Currently, direct oxidation of methane has only achieved very low methanol yields, but the enormous economic potential of this route has sparked intensive research on the field. The main challenges are generation of highly active oxygen species from O2and protection of the product.
