Contrast agents containing gadolinium are widely used to assist in the acquisition and interpretation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images. Non‐endogenous paramagnetic species provide enhanced image contrast and shorter image acquisition times through changing the local relaxation rates of bulk water protons. Both spin‐lattice relaxation time (T1) and spin‐spin relaxation time (T2) can be influenced in this way. This chapter considers the role of lanthanide complexes as T1contrast agents, which produce T1weighted images when suitable imaging pulse sequences are applied and deconvoluted. Relaxivity is a useful measure of the effectiveness of a complex as a contrast agent; the best contrast agents will have large relaxivities per mmol of gadolinium, effectively meaning that good images can be obtained with lower concentrations of contrast agent. The chapter also discusses the strategies for increasing relaxivity.
