The kinetic equations have been given a form which suggests an analogy with diffusion in a tube of varying cross section and which clearly identifies the rate-limiting quantities as the products of the disintegration rate constants for the particular micellar sizes and the corresponding equilibrium concentrations. It is rendered highly probable that the rate of the over all disintegration of the micelles is limited by steps pertaining to the rare intermediate micelles and an expression for the time constant of this process is deduced. The inverse of the time constant for the population rearrangement process among the abundant micelles is also derived and shown to be linearly increasing with overall concentration. The degree of association in micelles of surfactant solutions is typically of the order of 100. The treatment of their formation and dissociation has so far been based on rather simplified assumptions1,2,3. The following is a short presentation of an attempt4 at a more general treatment.
