BackgroundCorpora amylacea (CA) are intraluminal contents frequently found in the elderly [Citation 1, Citation 2]. Especially, prostatic CA are frequently found in prostate [Citation 3]. However, histological and biochemical features of CA are still not fully understood. The aim of this study was to elucidate histopathological and biochemical features of prostate CA in the elderly.Materials and methodsTo determine the occurrence of CA, we performed Congo red staining in 46 prostate samples obtained from 46 postmortem patients administered at Kumamoto University Hospital from 2007 to 2016. To analyse biochemical features of prostate CA, we performed mass spectrometry for prostate CA isolated from prostatic gland by means of laser microdissection.ResultsWe found CA in 40 (87%) of 46 prostate samples. Those CA samples contained amyloid deposits which were Congo red positive and showed apple-green birefringence under polarized light (Figure 1). By mass spectrometric analysis, prostate CA contained several proteins, such as lactoferrin, β 2-microglobulin, protein S100A9, Ig kappa chain and transgelin (Table 1).
