Identical surfaces illuminated at different color temperature but at equal brightness, as measured by photocells filtered to match CIE luminosity function, may not "look" equally bright. Two 4 ft. square screens were illuminated by projectors filtered to give color temperatures 5380, 5620 and 6260 K, a split beam being monitored by color corrected photocells. The observers (73) adjusted to equal brightness with neutral wedges at about 10 ft.-c. For the smaller difference in color temperature, 25% of observers failed to see difference in brightness. Average increase in apparent brightness was linear, 1%/100[degree] difference in color temperature. When a flicker method of comparison was used, alternating the 2 projectors onto the same screen at 30 cps, the brightness increase was only 1/7 as great, and less than half its standard deviation. Author argues that adaptation affects the match for large areas and steady state.
