The English summary appended to the paper is as follows: -Chromosome analyses and biochemical tests were performed on workers in a lead-oxide factory. All subjects had a markedly elevated blood-lead level. Cytological examination demonstrated an increased proportion of mitoses with secondary chromosomal aberrations in the workers exposed to lead-oxide, compared with a control group of healthy blood donors. The percentage of abnormal mitoses rose with an increasing (-aminolaevulinicacid excretion in the urine. In addition to chromosomal breaks there were also non-specific changes such as spiralizing defects, chromosomal adhesions and pulverization. The proportion of tetrapeloid mitoses and the mitoses index were slightly increased over those in the control group. In-vitro experiments with lead-acetate solution (10-4 to 10-6 mol) confirmed the abnormalities found in the lead workers. It was noticeable that the proportion of abnormal mitoses was largely independent of the added lead-acetate concentration. In view of the cytogenetic effect of lead it is recommended that young lead workers undergo serial controls with strictest criteria of assessment.
