Ifis a compact 3‐manifold whose first betti number is 1, andis a compact 3‐manifold such thatandhave the same finite quotients, thenfibres over the circle if and only ifdoes. We prove that groups of the formare distinguished from one another by their profinite completions. Thus, regardless of betti number, ifandare punctured‐torus bundles over the circle andis not homeomorphic to, then there is a finite groupsuch that one ofandmaps ontoand the other does not.
