(A) The severing enzymes spastin and katanin assemble into hexamers with AAA-ATPase domains at their core and flexible arms that recruit effectors for localization and severing activity regulation.(B) An interconnected double spiral in the central pore of the AAA-ATPase core coordinates the tubulin tail and is thought to pull on it to extract tubulin out of the microtubule. Severing is regulated in cis by post-translational modifications or in trans by MAPs that limit enzyme accessibility.
