EKBLOM, BJ~ RN. Effect of physical trainirg in u&descent boys. J. Appl. Physiol. 27 (S): S51)--355. 1 WL---Six boys, all 11 years of age at the start of the experiment, were studied before and after 6 months of physical training. A nontraining group of seven boys of the same age was studied at the same time. The maximal oxygen uptake of the training group improved from 2.15 to 2.48 liters/min (15%), but was unchanged in the reference group. Five boys from the training group continued training for a further 26 months, and it was then found that maximal oxygen uptake had increased in total by 55’;(;, vital capacity by 547&, and heart volume by 437&, which was more than expected from the agedependent increase in body size in terms of body height. The training group had an accelerated rate of increase in body height with age, when compared with growth estimates contained in charts, but this was not the case in the reference group. submaximal and maximal work; oxygen uptake; pulmonary ventilation; heart rate; blood lactate; heart volume; vital capacity; growthSEVERAL STUDIES (3, 7, 11) have shown that successful athletes in endurance events are characterized by very high aerobic power (maximal oxygen uptake) and large dimensions (heart volume, blood volume, lung volume). Crosssectional studies like these do not, however, answer the question of whether or not these large functional and static dimensions depend on the athletes’ genetic or training background or elucidate the combined effect of these two factors.
