The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of hybrid courses as compared to those of traditional courses on the rate of student attrition and seek and understanding to the Puerto Rican cultural issues to the rates of student attrition contributing on each course. A mixed method design was used for this study in which 200 students from three different higher education institutions in Puerto Rico participated in the quantitative portion and 20 participants with experience in hybrid, online, and some who opted never to take a course with an online component participated for the qualitative portion. Findings from the study revealed that there was a difference in student attrition between learners enrolled in traditional courses (i.e., less attrition) and those enroll in hybrid courses (i.e., more attrition). Based on the findings of the study, Puerto Rican college institutions providing hybrid instruction should provide an additional support for student retention programs. It also noted that Puerto Rican students are updated in the use of technology and are looking forward to new trends on instructional environments.
