In the USA intravenous drug abusers make up the second largest group with AIDS and are the primary source of transmission to heterosexuals and children. New York authorities are currently considering lifting restrictions on the availability of sterile needles as a way to prevent the spread of AIDS. The Street Research Unit of the Substance Abuse Services has noticed two types of "free" needles in the city. Some needle sellers include an extra needle with every complete syringe and needle, and a few drug dealers include a "free" needle and syringe with heroin.
