The 7 bacterial viruses of the T group active against Escherichia coli are rapidly inactivated at gas-liquid interfaces. The kinetics of this inactivation, whether brought about by shaking in air, or by bubbling with N2, are those of a 1st order reaction. This inactivation may be prevented by addition of enough protein to maintain the gas-liquid interface in a saturated condition with respect to protein. The analogy between this inactivation of viruses by shaking, and the surface denatura-tion of proteins is pointed out and discussed.
