When whole human blood was subjected to viscometric flow, individual red cells were seen to be elongated and oriented in the shear field. A tank tread-like motion of the membrane around the cell content occurred. In dilute suspensions of erythrocytes in viscous media, the same behavior was better observed and could also be measured quantitatively.
