Developed video imaging strategies to map activity patterns generated by specific visual stimuli in monkey striate cortex. All experiments began with conventional electrophysiological recordings to ensure that cortical cells were healthy and to document instances of normal response properties (eg, orientation selectivity, ocular dominance) for comparison with the optical images of neuronal activity obtained later. Results of the video imaging show how orientation preferences are distributed across the cortical surface and indicate that this distribution is characterized by 2-dimensional patches and 1-dimensional borders. The ability to look repeatedly at the same piece of tissue, in some cases over a period of weeks, makes the video imaging approach ideal for studies of cortical development.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
