CENTRIFUGAL DEVELOPMENT of paper chromatograms and of thin layer chromatograms has enabled considerable increase in speed for paper and thin layer chromatography (1). Vacuum and pressure differentials approaching an atmosphere have, in the past, been used to accelerate column chromatography {2). Nevertheless, in orderto maintain reasonable development times, present column chromatography practice in-volves use of bed particles of at least about 25 microns average diameter. Two different methods for forcing liquids through microparticulate beds have been foundto increase speed for column chromatography, and to produce advantages in resolution, adsorbent capacity, and handling ability formicro or macro chromatographic problems.
