Fat cells isolated from epididymal fat pads of well-fed rats contain very few lipid-rich particles. The numbers of these particles increase in vitro following incubation with epinephrine. These lipid-rich particles appear in the cells only when they are actively engaged in the release of non-esterified fatty acid into the medium. Electron micrographs of these epinephrine treated cells show them to be lipid-rich bodies with a smooth membrane. These bodies are mostly formed from the bulk lipid in response to the stimulus given by epinephrine and probably serve as vehicles for the transport of lipid from the bulk fat to the centers of lipase in the cytoplasm.
