Sera from 123 individuals were tested for their capacity to protect mice against swine influenza virus and the results classified according to age groups and previous history of an attack of influenza. Results of protection tests with these sera and human influenza virus had been previously reported, and results with the two viruses are compared in this report. The sera of 12 infants from 3 days to 1 month of age consistently neutralized swine influenza virus. Sera of 7 babies from 2 to 9 months of age failed to show protection against this virus. One of 14 sera from children between the ages of 1 and 5 yrs.; 2 of 8 from children 6-9 yrs. and 4 of 7 from children 10-12 yrs. neutralized the virus completely or almost completely. Those from persons from 21 yrs. on, with few exceptions, afforded complete protection; 44 of 45 persons giving a positive history of influenza possessed neutralizing serum; 25 of 29 persons with no history of an attack of influenza also neutralized swine influenza virus. The accuracy of the histories is questioned by the authors. The significance of the finding in human sera of antibodies capable of neutralizing swine influenza virus is discussed in relation to the type of virus present in the 1918 epidemic.
