THE EXPERT PANEL on the Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate, which was established by the International Committee for Standardization in Haematology in 1965, made recommendations for the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) test of human blood, which have been published as a Tentative ICSH Standard. 1 Comments on this document have been received from a number of international and national bodies and from individuals. These have been considered, together with the results of further experimental work by the Panel members. This report takes account of these comments and findings. The original aim was to recommend an international reference method for the ESR test. However, the ESR is complex and still poorly understood, and there is at present no method for measurement of ESR that can ensure that the test is not influenced in misleading ways by variations in relative erythrocyte volume {ie, packed cell volume or hematocrit) and by other unidentified factors.
