Considerable progress has been made towards the development of a monitoring trap system for orange wheat blossom midge (OWBM), Sitodiplosis mosellana, in the UK. The pheromone 2,7-nonadiyl dibutyrate lured male insects into traps. The number of OWBM caught in the pheromone traps gave a reliable indication of the onset of flight activity in the vicinity of wheat fields and had a strong correlation with the severity of subsequent crop infestation levels. The high sensitivity of the traps outweighed the fact that pheromone traps catch male rather than female insects. Pheromone traps can be used to give a warning to farmers of when midge levels are expected to be damagingly high. The insecticide needs to be applied soon after detection of high levels of midge because insecticide only targets adults and larvae before they reach the grain. A decision support model was devised to develop pheromone traps for risk assessment and aid farmer decision making. It takes into account that there can be large variations in trap catch from field to field and that infestation within a field was best explained by pheromone trap catches in neighbouring fields. In a typical year, there is a good correlation between trap catch and crop damage level but in an atypical year movement of females between fields could complicate this.
