Abstract A new form of microscopy, based on imaging with elastic waves, has evolved in recent years. The virtue of the acoustic microscope is that its contrast depends on the variation in elastic properties which is a fundamentally different process from the contrast mechanisms operative in an optical microscope. There are situations where the resolution capability of the scanning acoustic microscope is superior to that of the best optical microscope. These facts, together with the unique capability of the acoustic microscope to image the interior of optically opaque objects, have created a powerful new laboratory technique. The design of the acoustic microscope is reviewed and its principles of operation are discussed. Micrographs obtained with various techniques from a range of objects are illustrated. Techniques for subsurface imaging are discussed and illustrated by reference to a variety of results. An outline is given of possible future advances.
