Nearly a century of scientific inquiry into the nature of mutation has offered an exciting glimpse of the forces that cause mutation and drive evolution. New concepts make us realize the magnitude of the challenge of duplicating and distributing an accurate copy of the genome each time a cell divides. For each of the 1016somatic cell divisions that occur in a human lifetime, each copy of the genome must contain an intact sequence of some 3 billion nucleotide base pairs, and each daughter cell must receive the correct number of the 46 chromosomes into which the instruction book of life is parceled. The challenging task of accurate DNA replication and distribution must be accomplished while the cell is under constant attack by forces that damage DNA.
