Intact, isolated parenchymal cells were prepared from livers of rats fed a fat-free diet for 10 to 12 hours, following a 48-hour period of fasting. The ability of these cells to synthesize protein, in general, and the soluble fatty acid synthetase, in particular, was studied. These investigations demonstrated that the isolated liver cells synthesized protein and that one of the proteins synthesized was the soluble fatty acid synthetase complex.
