These data suggest that thrombospondin may have a specific role in the formation of the extracellular matrix and may be affected by variations in biosynthetic phenotype. The developing fibrin clot may represent a specialized example of an extracellular matrix. The incorporation of thrombospondin into fibrin and plasma clots can be demonstrated by determining the amount of radiolabeled thrombospondin that is associated with these clots and by immunofl~orescence.~~~~' Studies of thrombospondin distribution in the clot as a function of time suggest that the majority of thrombospondin is only transiently associated with the clot." Bale et al. I' have reported that thrombospondin is incorporated into the clot while the fibrin is forming.
