In 1954 Hutchinson and Slobodkin suggested that populations can be viewed as feedback systems that could resonate in response to environmental fluctuation with a frequency of approximately one generation time. In this paper we pursue this observation by constructing several mathematical models based on the demographic equations governing population age structure. The existence of this and several other effects of ecological importance are investigated for populations coupled by age—specific interactions.
