The impact of a cylindrical specimen against a rigid anvil was analysed in 1948 by G. I. Taylor. In 1987, Jones, Gillis and Foster proposed a modification to Taylor's analysis. This modification included a new equation of motion for the undeformed section of the specimen and relaxed one of the assumptions of Taylor's original work. While Jones and co authors were able to show the existence of an exact solution, the utility of the analysis was severely limited by its complexity. The present paper introduces an approximation into this model which produces a simple algebraic formula to estimate its exact solution. Results of 92 tests of copper, aluminum and steel specimens are reported and used to evaluate this new approximation to the Jones, Gillis and Foster analysis.
