Abstract It is shown that there are similarity motions of a group of n identical linear dislocations moving in a slip plane under their mutual repulsion with a velocity proportional to an arbitrary power of the stress. Similarity motions of the group also exist if there is a suitable applied stress field which may be time dependent, if there is a locked dislocation, if the dislocations are not identical, if each dislocation has a different mobility, if the mobility varies along the slip plane, and if there is an elastic boundary producing image dislocations. Two-dimensional similarity motions exist for groups of dislocations on intersecting slip planes. Related similarity motions exist for other entities such as the inertial motion of a group of n point masses moving under their mutual gravitational attraction.
