The second edition of Dr Hoeprich's treatiseInfectious Diseasesis a monumental tribute to both the editor and his specialty. The depth of the book, written by 97 infectious disease experts, and the breadth, encompassing 163 chapters grouped in 23 sections, are self-evident. Section 1 contains a general description of microorganisms and the host's response to infections. The chapter on nosocomial infections is a timely addition to this second edition: the Center for Disease Control estimates almost 2 million hospital-acquired infections per year in the United States. The chapters in section 2 outline laboratory examinations ranging from microscopy to antimicrobial sensitivity testing. Section 3 is appropriately devoted to the prophylaxis of infectious diseases. The remaining sections deal with infectious diseases grouped according to their organ system of major involvement, ranging from respiratory to renal, venereal, neural, and skeletal infections.
