Chapters on pain mechanisms frequently review the manner in which a tissue-damaging stimulus is processed by the nervous system. That information, while important, is not always directly applicable to improved pain management. This chapter will not review pain pathways. Rather it is hoped it will stimulate the reader to consider several issues affecting the future of pain management.Research on the causes of pain and the development of new treatment modalities for both acute and chronic pain have become an important focus for many clinicians and basic scientists. Leaders in this field, through societies like the International Association for the Study of Pain, have provided exciting possibilities for the clinical management of pain. As exciting and encouraging as those developments are, however, excessive concentration on them tends to eclipse available techniques that are in fact extremely effective if caregivers are educated to their great potential. The development of acute pain management teams may provide the educational opportunities needed to improve future pain management. The need for such educational efforts will be the first focus of this chapter.
