Publisher Summary During the early stage of gestation, from the decline of the first embryonal hematopoiesis in the yolk sac to the establishment of the bone marrow hematopoiesis, the fetal liver is the most significant hematopoietic organ. From the end of the nineteenth century, many morphological studies have been made on the fetal hepatic hematopoiesis and the hematopoietic processes in this organ have been described. This chapter describes the development of the hepatic tissue and the hepatic nonlymphoid hematopoiesis, such as granulopoiesis, megakaryopoiesis, and erythropoiesis by gestational age from the morphological standpoint. It must be borne in mind that the fetal liver as an organ of hematopoiesis is in the process of rapid growth, development, and proliferation completely unlike that of the adult liver. The chapter presents some morphological distinctive features observed in fetal megakaryocytes and mature neutrophils.
