Crossing and progeny analyses showed that five deeply pigmented hypovirulent strains contain single nuclear genes that confer the morphology characteristic of a class of European hypovirulent strains formerly called Jaune Régénéré or Pigmentato. These single nuclear genes also determine restricted virulence in host chestnut trees. Such strains arise only from dsRNA-containing strains and may be the result of integration of cytoplasmic genetic material into the nuclear genome.
