The notion of ecotechnology as the use of technological means for ecosystem management in a way minimizing the costs and damages caused to the global environment is specified in respect to reservoir water quality management. Mathematical models aimed at or with possible use to solving reservoir water quality problems, particularly those connected with eutrophication, are reviewed. From the different types of model available for use in management, the predictive and optimization type models are stressed. The models are divided according to whether the options they consider relate to the watershed, to the reservoir or to the outflow, respectively. The needs for further development of ecotechnological models are outlined.
