This is a very impressive work, both intellectually and physically. The two‐volume set comprises over 200 entries written by over 250 international authorities, from all sections of the globe, chosen by an eminent 16‐member editorial advisory board. Over 1,600 pages in American Quarto also take up a large amount of room on the bookshelf! On turning to the Preface, the editors state that one of the most important goals of the Encyclopedia of Supramolecular Chemistry is “to provide a broad based overview of the discipline and to capture the significance of research in this area, with special emphasis on a synthesis of the concepts and language of supramolecular chemistry across a wide range of related disciplines”. To this reviewer, the description of a “goal” should be a statement of brevity. I was left wondering whether the editors' penchant for several lines of text where a few words would suffice would be a reflection of what I was about to read. Thankfully, however, this was not the case. Reading at random, in areas where I have some specialist knowledge, individual entries were written with incisiveness and great clarity. The articles were up to date and written by leading researchers in the field.
