Brittle fracture of hull structure causes serious structural, fatal and environmental damage once it happens. However, if by chance a brittle crack initiates, it is extremely important that a backup brittle crack arresting function is provided to arrest its propagation and to ensure structural reliability. The brittle crack arrest concept in addition to brittle crack initiation control makes it possible to achieve “double integrity” by preventing both brittle crack initiation and propagation. Studies on the long crack arrest issue of heavy-thick shipbuilding steels have reported insufficient brittle crack arrestability. Some specially manufactured TMCP steels have sufficient brittle crack arrestability, but the necessary conditions for arresting long brittle cracks have not been reported. Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) organized a research committee composed of Japanese shipbuilding companies and steel manufacturers to conduct a co-research project to establish a brittle crack arrest design concept. Actual-scale model tests using shipbuilding steels were conducted in order to clarify the critical conditions for brittle crack propagation in the project. The required Kca value for the arrest design was proposed based on the test results. This research has been conducted by the research committee of ClassNK, and the results have been summarized and incorporated in their “Guidelines on Brittle Crack Arrest Design.”
