The subjects were elderly people in 2 institutions, male medical hospital staff, male inmates of a state prison and a representative sample of the population of Baltimore, most of them men. There were only 17 subjects under 20 years of age and in computing the regression of serum vitamin B12on age they were excluded. Vitamin B12was estimated microbiologically in samples of fasting serum. The regression coefficient of serum vitamin B12on age was highly significant for each of the groups. Comparison of those 20 to 49 years with those 50 to 94 years gave, in the younger group, a percentage incidence of values less than 100, less than 150 and less than 200 µg. vitamin B12per 100 ml., of 0.83, 7.02 and 23.2; corresponding percentages in the older group were 18.2, 45.4 and 74.0.-F.
