Discussion Meeting papers are traditionally published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. Because of the strong interest in methane, and the number of papers submitted, these papers will form two issues of the journal. The papers in this first volume include assessments of the state of atmospheric methane in 2021, field campaigns at a number of sites worldwide and modelling studies of regional and global budgets. Wider issues are addressed with papers on emissions from fossil fuel industries and agriculture. There is discussion of the wider implications of methane growth, and the potential task of mitigating sources, and perhaps removing methane from the atmosphere in order to reverse the current increase. The second volume has a strong focus on wetland studies, both in the Arctic and Tropics, as well as considering wider aspects of mitigating emissions.
