On several occasions throughout chapter one, the authors repeat their ambitious commitment to provide analysts with a systematic method to study pathways of Revista Espaola de Lingstica Aplicada 29: 1 (2016), 338343. doi 10.1075/resla. 29.1. 14mai issn 02132028/e-issn 22546774 John Benjamins Publishing Company Book reviews 339 linked speech events. Besides the tools they propose to analyze these events (and which they describe in more detail in the following chapter), their proposal adds three more features: rst, the need to select those events which can be linked in a pathway (although they do not explain how to do so in a systematic and objective fashion); secondly, the need to analyze indexical signs and, nally, the need to focus on social positioning, social action and social processes as emergent from diachronic pathways of linked events.[...] they extend their analysis of the previous discrete event to a chain of linked events, as they already illustrated in Chapter 1.[...] Chapter 6 concludes with the main contributions the book oers. Since it has an explicit focus on linguistic anthropology, this may explain why other approaches to discourse analysis like CDA or CMC are not mentioned. Besides her research and teaching activities, Carmen Maz-Arvalo is currently the academic secretary of the English Department at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
